Community service has long been a priority for the Glases.

But they also wanted to give back financially.

Longtime Quincy residents Lowell and Vickie Glas have always felt the need to contribute to their community – both through service and financial support.

“We have been blessed,” Lowell says.

Lowell enjoyed a long career in sales, with more than 47 years at Modern Printing. Vickie spent 40 years at Moorman Manufacturing, now ADM. They don’t have children, so they committed their time and financial blessings to benefit the community they love.

Both volunteer and have served on boards of area organizations. Lowell served on the Quincy Park Board for 12 years. Both have volunteered at their church, Melrose Chapel UMC, as well as at Sunset Home and Blessing Hospital.

At Blessing, both started volunteering at the front desk. Vickie later volunteered in the hospital’s Tea Room, and Lowell continues to serve as one of the Men of Blessing.

“Volunteering broadens your world,” Vickie says. “You meet a lot of nice people.”

The couple also experienced the Health System’s mission to “improve the health of our communities”
first-hand.

Lowell had a triple bypass in 2012 at Blessing Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Center. In 2014, he was treated for lymphoma at the Blessing Cancer Center. Donations to the Blessing Foundation contributed to the opening of both centers and continues to fund equipment, patient services, and patient needs.

Lowell was grateful he didn’t have to leave Quincy for care.
“Vickie didn’t have to drive to Springfield and stay in a hotel,” Lowell said. “I’m thankful it’s here.”

The couple created an endowed fund through a regional organization to provide annual support to charities that have meant the most to them – including the Blessing Foundation. They also contribute directly to the Foundation on a routine basis.

Because of the nature of their careers, both Lowell and Vickie had been aware of the work of the Blessing Foundation since its founding in 1983.

They became regular donors because they were confident 100% of their donations would be put to good use.

Their contributions to the Blessing Foundation are specifically directed and the money goes to the greatest needs in those chosen areas – Hospice, the Cancer Center, or Heart & Vascular Center, for example.

That could mean helping patients and families who are struggling financially purchase lifesaving medications, build wheelchair ramps, pay rent or electric bills, or buy gas to get to medical appointments.

The Foundation also funds major renovations and new equipment for Blessing Hospital, Illini Community Hospital and other Blessing Health System facilities, which improves health care for all people in the region.

“I’m glad we’re able to do it, to give back to the community,” Vickie says of the couple’s financial gifts.

The Glases feel blessed that they can help the Blessing Foundation connect the dots between health care and real life because they know the needs are great.

“And,” Lowell adds, “who knows when someday you might be the one who needs help.”
