Connecting Help to Need

The Blessing Foundation has been connecting the dots between health care and real life for more than 30 years, quietly and behind the scenes. Donations help hundreds of patients get back on their feet even after they go home.

Here are just a few real-life examples of the Blessing Foundation’s donations in action.

A patient with diabetes says he will “just go without insulin” because, while he has a Medicare Part D prescription plan, he can’t afford the deductible or co-pays. The Foundation ensured he didn’t go a day without his insulin.
A woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, right on the heels of her husband’s health issues that left him unemployed, is doing her best to keep up with bills. But the couple got a shut-off notice from their utility company. The Foundation helped catch them up on payments.

A dying grandfather who has custody of his grandson promises him a new laptop, but because of his illness and the cost of pre-paying for his funeral arrangements, he can no longer afford to buy it. He’s able to keep his promise, though, thanks to the Foundation.
A toddler is diagnosed with influenza and pneumonia, but her parents can’t afford the prescribed medicine. Without it, she’s at high risk for hospitalization and could die. The Foundation pays for the medication and she’s on the road to recovery.
A hospice patient with a terminal illness wants his wife and young child to visit him in the nursing home. But the family is on a fixed income and can’t afford to travel. The Foundation offers gas cards to ensure the man has quality time with his family at the end of life.
A breast cancer patient has been through radiation therapy and is starting chemotherapy and could use some fun. With the help of a local sports team, the Foundation gives her gift cards, so she can enjoy dinner and a movie with her husband.
A man with terminal cancer who used to live in the South told a social worker how much he missed shrimp gumbo. The hospice team located a restaurant in New Orleans and, using Foundation funds, ordered dinner for 12 to be shipped overnight. He died one day after he shared his taste of heaven with family and friends.
An occupational therapist recommends a patient use a tub transfer bench when bathing at home to prevent falls and possible readmission to the hospital. The patient lives paycheck-to-paycheck and insurance won’t cover the cost. The Foundation buys the bench, increasing the patient’s safety and independence.
Socks | Donation Opportunities
Some patients who use Blessing Hospital’s psychiatric services are homeless or don’t have money to buy basic clothing items like socks and underwear. The Foundation offers a small amount of cash and Blessing staff members volunteer to do the shopping.
A cancer patient who isn’t used to asking for help finally reaches out when bills pile up, causing anxiety. She was out of work for surgery and is losing time at work during radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and disability is just 60 percent of her salary. The Foundation helped get her back on solid ground.
Multiple doctor appointments – especially if you live miles away – means filling up the gas tank much more frequently, on top of other additional expenses. The Foundation on average uses $30,000 of donor money on gas cards so patients don’t miss appointments and stay on the road to recovery.
